5 Things You Can Do To Protect Yourself From Terrorism

A terror attack can happen on streets, in cars, in schools, in parks, at home, or anywhere else, so learning how to protect should not be undervalued. Terrorist tactics continue to evolve, and we must keep pace.  No one wants to think about a terrorist attack, but at the same time it is important to be prepared in case such an event happens.

Feeling uneasy? Getting a weird vibe? This topic page provides you important information on how to prevent a terrorist attack and protect yourself in various situations to stay as safe as possible.

Protect Yourself From Terrorism Tip #1: When You See Something, Say Something

Do not ignore a warning instinct. There’s nothing wrong with trusting your gut. All it takes to prevent an attack from happening may be a call to the authorities.

You may have seen or heard something that could be that vital piece of information that will help to stop a terrorist attack. If your gut tells you something doesn't look right, or if you have heard any information about suspicious activity or behavior please report it.

It may seem cliché, but security experts constantly return to this principle: if you see something, say something. Of course it’s not always comfortable to feel like you’re “telling on people” or that you might be reporting something absolutely normal. If it’s real however, imagine how much better you’ll feel knowing that you didn’t stand by idly.

So how do you know if someone’s behavior is suspicious? A good rule of thumb is to trust your instinct. If you question someone’s behavior at all, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Further than that, simply pay attention to the people around you. This advice is part of both listening to your instincts and being aware of your surroundings. You can often sense peoples' intentions just by the way they look at you. Heed warning signs even when you are with people you know and trust.

Some examples of suspicious activity or behavior could potentially include:

  • Hiring large vehicles or similar for no obvious reasons.

  • Buying or storing a large number of chemicals, fertilizers or gas cylinders for no obvious reasons.

  • Taking notes or photos of security arrangements, or inspecting CCTV cameras in an unusual way.

  • Looking at extremist material, including on the so-called dark web, or sharing and creating content that promotes or glorifies terrorism.

  • Someone receiving deliveries for unusual items bought online.

  • Embracing or actively promoting hateful ideas or extremist ideology.

  • Possessing firearms or other weapons or showing an interest in obtaining them.

  • Holding passports or other documents in different names, for no obvious reasons.

  • Anyone who goes away traveling for long periods but is vague about where.

  • Someone carrying out suspicious or unusual bank transactions.

Protect Yourself From Terrorism Tip #2: Train Your Body

Personal attacks are the type of events that happen at a moment’s notice and with little warning. Would you be able to defend yourself and your loved ones if someone were to attack you?

Are you physically fit enough to rely on your body in a dangerous situation? It’s impossible to know for certain, and it’s a question most of us don’t want to consider. Unfortunately, violence does exist, and knowing how to protect yourself means you will always be in the company of safety.

Don’t misunderstand what the word “fit” means. You don't have to have the physique of a football player to defend yourself, but it does help to be in relatively good shape. This combined with taking the proper safety precautions, learning self-defense techniques, and having awareness of basic ways how to protect yourself is what’s recommended.

And remember, you don't have to win the fight against an attacker! You just need to be able to survive it and get away. People who fight back may have more chance of injury, but they have better chances of survival.

If you see a crime is about to take place or you think that someone is going to commit a crime against you or your home, you should always try to contact the police or call for help before confronting any attacker or person committing a crime.

Protect Yourself From Terrorism Tip #3: Use Personal Protection Devices

There is a lot of violence in the world and, unfortunately, the chances are good that the perpetrator will be someone you know or have a close relationship with. For most of us, these numbers do not make sense; we simply cannot imagine someone in our lives looking to hurt or do us harm.

Personal safety is one of the most basic needs of every human. Personal protective equipment, such as pepper spray, personal alarms, and other law enforcement safety products can be of great help. They are some of the most important gadgets that anyone can have on their person as they offer personal protection and peace of mind.

A good example of such a device is a personal alarm. These alarms have buttons that, when pressed, sound off a loud siren that does not stop until you stop it. In that time, you will have alerted your neighbors, your friends, and even well-wishers just passing by.

The entire idea is to feel safe and secure at all times. Find personal alarm devices that are discreet enough to go unnoticed when you have them on your person, something that can look like jewelry.

The fact that they are all easy to use and conceal makes them ideal for a surprise move that your attacker will not be expecting. The one you choose will depend on your style and taste, but they are all highly effective in attacker situations.

Attacks are sudden, and when they happen, it’s all too easy for panic to take over. But with some simple self-defense tactics under your belt, you may just have the advantage.

Protect Yourself From Terrorism Tip #4: Know Your Exits

When an attack occurs, the difference between life and death could be determined in the first seconds and minutes. Whenever you are, either inside a movie theater or inside an airplane, it is always good advice to know where the exits are in any location. If possible, you want to figure out how to protect yourself and your family out if something bad happens.

Protect Yourself From Terrorism Tip #5: Safety at Home

Attacks can come any place, any time, even when you are at home. By planning how to respond to a terrorist attack, you can greatly improve your chances of survival. You can also lessen the impact of the attack by reducing the fear in the aftermath.

If someone knocks the door, never open it if you don't know who it is, and cannot verify their identity. These top tips can help:

  • Install a door viewer and a 1-inch deadbolt lock and use them. Look before opening your door to anyone. A video door phone or an intercom will enable you to identify callers before you open the door.

  • Keep doors locked at all times and instruct children never to open the door to anyone.

  • Require all strangers to show identification. If you haven't called for a repairman, don't let one inside. Leave him waiting outside and call his place of business to verify his reason for being in your area.

  • Install an intruder detection system (burglar alarm). Set external sounders at ‘instant’ to deter intruders if the alarm or a personal attack button is activated. An alarm can be fitted to doors, windows, or gates if the threat justifies such action.

  •  Fit a cable guard or strong door chain on outer doors - make sure you use it. Know where all your door keys are. Do not hand keys out to builders, etc.

  • A good guard dog is an asset. A barking dog may warn you of intruders.

  • Consider installing a television-linked CCTV system to assist in the identification of visitors

Security test: If someone is attempting to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of security measures, or if he is attempting to record and analyze reaction times to security breaches, contact your local authorities.
