10 Tips On Hiring A Locksmith

10 Tips on Hiring a Locksmith

A locksmith is a person who works with locks, keys and security systems. They fix broken locks, make keys, and install security systems like alarms.  The may specialize in residential locksmith services, commercial/business locksmith service, or both.

No one wants to “need a locksmith”, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. Perhaps you’re locked out of your office or have lost your house keys.  A locksmith will be your first call, but which one do you choose?

With so many companies offering lock services, it’s important to know how to select the best one, and avoid the rip-off artists and the non-licensed frauds. Let’s take a look at some “musts” to look for when selecting a locksmith.

1.    Hire a local locksmith

One of the first things to address is if the locksmith is local to our area and has a reputation in the cal area.  A locksmith that is not local may add some extra charges for travelling/mileage along with the regular service fees.

The benefit of hiring a local locksmith is not only the fact that they can reach you quicker if you have an emergency lockout situation, but also that their insurance and licences will be valid in your area.  Plus, you have to wonder why a locksmith that does not regularly service your area would be willing to come to you.

2.    Get referrals

If you’re not experiencing an emergency lockout, take time to ask friends and neighbors if they’ve worked with local locksmiths who provided great service and reasonable prices.   At the minimum, look for a locksmith who has more than 4 or 5 favorable 5 star online reviews.

You would be surprised how often locksmiths are needed.  Often, you’ll find that simply asking people you know for recommendations can be a great way to locate professionals in any industry.

If your friend or neighbor has had a bad experience with a company, find out ahead of time and save yourself grief.  Similarly, pay attention if there are several negative online reviews.

3.    Use the internet

Many locksmiths now have their own website explaining their services, hours of operation, fees, etc.  A locksmith worth his salt who values customer service and his reputation will invest money in an informative website and online presence.

Note if the locksmith not onl ha a website, but also a presence with reviews on Angie's list, elp, Google Business etc.  Your fellow consumers are great resources when it comes to determining which locksmiths are reputable and which should be avoided.

4.    Choose a certified locksmith

You should not choose a locksmith who isn’t certified.  Locksmiths certifications, offered by Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA), are only awarded to professionals who have proven knowledge in various domains in locksmithing.

There are multiple certifications offered by ALOA, and attaining any of them means a professional has demonstrated adherence to the latest standards of locksmithing practice and technical proficiency.

You also want a locksmith who state licensed, bonded, and insured.

5.    Look for a reputable company

I now this sounds like a no-brainer.  There are certainly some corporate locksmith companies that are reputable with great customer service, but choosing a family-owned and operated locksmith has several distinct benefits.

Having been in the community for years and years, you can depend upon consistent service and products, with full warranty.  You know we will be here tomorrow and that we stand behind our work.

6.    Check for current insurance

In certain situations, damage can occur to your car, home, or business during or after security solutions are installed.  In addition to licensure, current insurance is an important thing to check for before hiring a locksmith.

An insured locksmith is able to provide proof of insurance and, should damage occur to your property, offers coverage that protects both you and your property.

7.    Look for professional associations

Professional locksmiths spend a long time practicing their craft before going into business, so they’re motivated to be an active member of industry associations.  In addition to participating in local locksmith societies, locksmiths also belong to professional organizations like the Associated Locksmith of America.

Ask your prospective locksmith if they are affiliated with any of these organizations.

8.    Be prepared

Finding a dependable 24-hour locksmith doesn’t have to be perplexing.  Prepare for crisis situations. Keep a list of reputable locksmith telephone numbers in your phone times, or bookmark a website directory of local locksmiths so you can access it effortlessly when you need it.

9.    Review company background

Doing a background check before hiring a locksmith is a must.  You have to check the reviews on that company, ask referrals as much as possible.  If you cannot find a large quantity of information, skip that locksmith and go on to the next one.

A locksmith is not the place to hire a fly-by-night company.

10. Be On guard

Notice the locksmith’s vehicle, whether it is clearly marked with a company title or logo. Ask for identification, badge, business card, etc.

Furthermore, be wary of somebody who doesn’t verify that you are the genuine proprietor or an authorized individual to have access to the dwelling or business. A reputable locksmith will ask for your identification before performing the work.

Once the work is done, ask for an itemized invoice that breaks down the work performed, products/parts and service charge.
